Research interests and current focus
My research area is management of plant diseases of economic importance. I am working on biological control of plant diseases using antagonistic bacteria for the last 10 years and I study bacterial diseases of crop plants especially on R. solanacearum for the past 5 years. Promising biocontrol agents were identified and evaluated for the management of major soil borne diseases in brinjal, groundnut and mango. Promising antagonistic bacteria were characterized using molecular biology tools and their mechanism of antagonism is being studied. Field application of antagonists was standardized using carrier based formulation.
Major areas of R. solanacearum research include phenotype based characterization to genome sequence based fingerprinting of R. solanacearum through pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), REP-PCR and Multilocus Sequence typing (MLST). Molecular diagnosis of the plant pathogens especially R. solanacearum and host resistance for bacterial wilt management is other important areas of my research. For the first time, my group used PFGE to characterize the R. solanacearum population, which would have epidemiological/quarantine implications.
Maintaining a collection of more than 230 isolates of R. solanacearum infecting tomato, eggplant, chillies from five states. This is the highest number of characterized R. solanacearum isolates being maintained in a centre. Under outreach project on wilt diseases (PhytoFuRa), we identified promising biocontrol bacteria and evaluated their efficiency in the management of bacterial wilt. Our research group Identified stable sources of bacterial wilt resistance in solanaceaous vegetable especially in eggplant which could be used in understanding the mechanisms of bacterial wilt resistance and breeding for wilt resistant varieties in eggplant.
Current focus includes standardization of management practices to the major soil borne diseases affecting vegetables and spices. Our lab focuses on the use of novel, non-conventional strategies for the pathogen control. Pathogen detection and disease diagnosis using conventional and biotechnological techniques is an integral part of our core research area. Further, host-pathogen interaction in bacterial wilt system by phenomics and genomics approach is identified as an important area of study.
Outreach and extension
I visit farmer’s field to attend the field problems related to plant diseases. The cause of the problem is identified and management practices are recommended. Farmers’ awareness programmes about the plant disease management are conducted regularly and farmers visit to our experiment field on bacterial wilt management during 2011. Filed demonstrations on plant disease management using biocontrol agents were conducted across vegetable growing villages.
I organized Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Programme in Biotechnology (Bio-fertilizers & Bio-pesticides) from 26th March to 22nd April, 2008. In the four weeks programme, both lectures and practical demonstrations on various aspects on production of bio-pesticides and bio-fertilizers will be conducted covering a wide range of topics on various technical aspects in addition to sessions on entrepreneurship development, including financial assistance.
State level training programme on Pest and Disease Management of major spice crops of Goa was conducted in 2011. Over seventy five farmers from across the state and nine agricultural officers from the state department of agriculture participated in the programme. Two one-day awareness programme on “Management of Pepper diseases in the plantation” was conducted in 2011 at farmers villages of Goa in association with Zonal Agricultural Offices.
National symposium on “Microbial diversity and its applications in health, agriculture and industry” was organized during March 4-5, 2011. I involved in organizing the event as a Co-organizing secretary. Four days National workshop on “Molecular subtyping of microbes using Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis was organized during 20-23 August, 2011 with the financial support from Department of biotechnology, GOI. I worked as workshop co-coordinator.
