Salient Professional Achievements
Developed production technology to maximize chip grade (45-85 mm) & French fry grade (> 75 mm) potatoes for 6 Indian potato processing varieties. The technology increased net returns to the farmers by 15-20% besides ensuring round the year availability of quality raw material to the potato processing industries.
Co-developer of 4 high yielding potato processing varieties namely Kufri Chipsona-3, Kufri Chipsona-4, Kufri Himsona and Kufri Frysona. The combination of varieties and production technologies ushered a revolution in processing with >10-fold increase in consumption of processing potatoes during 2000 to 2022 from < 2.0% (0.45 million tonnes) to 9.0% (4.52 million tonnes) in last 22 years; increased the productivity potential of ~2.0 lakh hectare lands ensuring food and livelihood security of ~2.0 lakhs farm families through better net returns (25-30%); generation of 28-million-man days and Rs. 4000 crores net returns to the farmers per annum, respectively.
Standardized irrigation and planting schedules of salt tolerant basmati rice & wheat varieties. Recommended irrigation and planting schedules results in higher rice-wheat productivity, saves ~30% of irrigation water and 20% of energy (diesel) leading to reduced pollution.
Developed allometric models for estimating terrestrial carbon sequestration of Poplar and Eucalyptus plantations & their soil amelioration potential in Trans-IGP. Identified agroforestry rotational models and plantation age-based crop synergy for enhancing climate resilience and farmer’s income in salt affected ecology.
Developed conceptual framework for promotion of agro-ecotourism as a multidimensional farming enterprise in coastal regions of India (Goa and Karnataka).
