Celebration of ‘World Soil Day’

ICAR-CCARI and ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) North Goa celebrated ‘World Soil Day’ on 5th December 2020 at ICAR – KVK, North Goa, ICAR – CCARI, Goa. A total of 60 farmers and farm women participated from different villages of North Goa attended the programme. Dr. B.L Kasinath, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK North Goa in his welcome address spoke on the Importance of Soil Testing and Soil Health Cards. The Chief Guest of the programme, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Hon’ble Union Minister of State and Ministry of AYUSH and Ministry of Defence, in his address said, “We should worship and work with soil for food, health and better environment”. He appealed and emphasized the importance of organic farming for producing safe food for good health. He urged the youth to take agriculture as a profession and to build a career in it. Lastly, he emphasized the role of family farming in the State of Goa. Shri Nevil Alphonso, Director, Directorate of Agriculture, Goa was the Guest of the Honour and he apprised the farmers regarding World Soil Day and different Government schemes on Soil Health and Organic Farming. Dr. Gopal Mahajan, Scientist, ICAR – CCARI, Goa, explained briefly introduced the outline of the programme.

On the occasion ‘Fertilizer Calculator New’ app was launched by the Chief Guest. During the programme around 300 Soil Health Card were distributed and five extension folders were released. Vegetable seed kits were also distributed to the farmers for promoting vegetable farming based on soil health card based nutrient management. The technical session of the programme had lectures on different aspects of organic farming and soil health management, soil sampling procedure, organic farming, biofertilizer, farmyard manure and New Farmers Act 2020.

The programme was organized by following all the SOPs for COVID-19.
