ICAR-KVK, North Goa Celebrated World Soil Day
ICAR-KVK North Goa, ICAR-CCARI Goa, organized an event to mark World Soil Day at Curca, Bambolim, Talaualim Gram Panchayat, North Goa on December 5, 2024. The event, which aimed to raise awareness about soil health, was attended by 31 participants, including 25 males and 6 females, primarily from the local farming community.
The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Ms. Diona Korgaonkar, Sarpanch of Curca, Bambolim, Talaualim Gram Panchayat, North Goa, who urged the farmers to adopt modern agricultural practices. She encouraged them to use fertilizer recommendations available on the ICAR-CCARI fertilizer app for better soil management and increased crop productivity.
Dr. A. Raizada, Principal Scientist (Agroforestry) and Director Incharge, ICAR-CCARI, Goa, also addressed the gathering. He emphasized the importance of conducting soil tests every two years to monitor the nutrient status of the soil. He further highlighted the benefits of community farming, suggesting that cooperative farming methods could lead to greater profitability, especially in vegetable cultivation.
Dr. Udharwar S. K. V., Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science) and In-charge at ICAR-KVK North Goa, welcomed the participants and shared the benefits of soil testing, which is provided as a service at KVK. He also gave a lecture on improving soil health through organic means, specifically using cow dung and cow urine.
Mr. Rahul Kumar, SMS (Agronomy), spoke about the importance of natural farming practices and how they contribute to maintaining healthy soil ecosystems while promoting sustainability. Mr. Rahul Kulkarni, ACTO (Soil Science), also focused on the vital role of soil testing in ensuring long-term soil health and agricultural productivity.
