ICAR- CCARI, Goa Celebrated World Environment Day -2024 @MissionLiFE
The ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI) in Goa celebrated World Environment Day on June 5, 2024, under Mission LiFE. This year’s theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” underscored the critical issues facing our planet and the urgent need for sustainable solutions. The event was graced by Smt. Tejaswini P. IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Research and Utilization Division, Margao, as Chief Guest. In her address, Smt. Tejaswini P. praised the efforts of ICAR-CCARI, Goa for implementing environment-friendly practices such as rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, the establishment of a biogas unit, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. She emphasized the critical importance of lifestyle changes to conserve the environment and the necessity of practicing the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) to achieve sustainable development. Dr. A. Raizada, the In-charge Director, delivered an insightful lecture on “Issues on Land Degradation and Pollution in Goa.” He provided an overview of land degradation, water crises, mining, and the impact of unsustainable tourism on the environment. In a show of solidarity and commitment to environmental conservation, all staff members of ICAR-CCARI, Goa, participated in the Mission LiFE pledge. This pledge symbolizes their dedication to promoting and practicing sustainable and eco-friendly measures in their daily lives and professional activities. To further the theme of land restoration, around 50 seedlings of kokum and bamboo were planted during the program. This tree planting initiative aims to combat soil erosion, enhance biodiversity, and contribute to the reforestation efforts in the region. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of approximately 60 staff members, both permanent and contractual. Their involvement highlighted the collective commitment of the institute towards fostering a greener environment. The program was coordinated by Dr. Uthappa A.R., Scientist (Agroforestry), Smt. Pranjali W., Technical Officer, and Shri Vishwajeet, Technical Officer.
