ICAR - KVK, CCARI North Goa commemorated World Environment Day
ICAR- Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa and ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Institute, Goa, celebrated World Environment Day at Marcela on 5th June 2024. The event focused on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Dr N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK North Goa, inaugurated the programme. He addressed several natural and anthropogenic causes of land degradation in his speech. He emphasized the importance of adopting land restoration practices to conserve and manage natural resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity, ensuring their sustainability for present and future generations. Shri Vishwas Sukathankar, Chairman, Kumajuve Dairy Cooperative Society urged farmers to increase tree plantation to mitigate the effects of climate change. Dr. Sanjaykumar Udharwar, SMS (Animal Science), delivered a lecture on the potential of perennial fodder crops in mitigating soil erosion, preserving water and nutrients, and ensuring the sustainability of fodder production. Mr. Rahul M. Kulkarni, ACTO, discussed soil and water conservation methods in the context of natural farming. These methods aim to improve the ability of agroecosystems in coastal areas to withstand climate change and store carbon. For the benefits of participants Dr J. Jaya Sheebha, Consultant, Siddha Clinical Research Unit in Goa, provided an overview of the significance of medicinal plants in developing curative and preventive day to day medical treatments for humans.. A total of 34 farmers, consisting of 14 male and 20 female farmers, participated and distributed vegetable seed kit to all the participants. Mr. Rahul Kumar, SMS (Agronomy), proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was coordinated by Dr N. Bommayasamy, Dr Sanjaykumar Udharwar, Mr Rahul M. Kulkarni, Mr Rahul Kumar, and Mr Vishwajeet Prajapati.
