Adoption of improved technologies in watermelon and cowpea cultivation for higher income of tribal community of Goa

 

ICAR RC for Goa organized a progamme ‘Adoption of improved technologies in watermelon and cowpea cultivation for higher income of tribal community of Goa’ under TSP programme for Tribal farmers of Dhulape, Verna

 

ICAR RC for Goa launched a programme ‘Adoption of improved technologies in watermelon and cowpea cultivation for higher income of tribal community of Goa’ under Tribal Sub Plan Programme of Indian Council of Agricultural Research for the benefit of tribal farmers of Dhulape, Verna.

    Different farmers groups have been identified (almost 100 farmers) for executing the programme. Under this programme ICAR Research Complex for Goa identified and supported cultivation of two important crops namely watermelon and cowpea. Farm inputs like seeds of cowpea (Alsando) and water melon were distributed along with bio-control agent to the farmers. Besides, fertilizer and pesticide will also be provided in due course of time.

    Further to assist the farmers, two extension folders on production guidelines of these crops were printed and distributed to the growers. On this occasion Dr. Narendra Pratap Singh, Director, ICAR RC for Goa, highlighted the importance of scientific cultivation of cowpea and watermelon. He elaborated the kind of assistance available under TSP to the tribal farmers. He assured the farmers of all scientific and technical help from ICAR throughout the crop period. Scientist from ICAR highlighted the salient points in growing the crops for maximum production and benefit. This programme was attended and facilitated by the Sarpach of Dhulape, Verna.

    The efforts of ICAR were appreciated by the Sarpanch and farming community. The programme was organized on 13th November 2013. Syngenta India provided 4 kg of watermelon seeds for this programme.
