Distribution of Processing machinery under Tribal Sub Plan Programme

 

                   Goa is blessed with lot of kokum and jackfruit trees. Huge quantity of fruits are available from April to June. Enormous quantity of fruits are also wasted due to negligence and ignorance. This leads to postharvest loss of fruits and also nutritional drain. As Value Addition is one of the main ways to increase the farmers’ income, ICAR CCARI is instrumental in involving the farmers and farm women in taking up Value addition as an enterprise. A project entitled, ‘Empowering Tribes of Goa with postharvest machinery for processing and value addition in minor fruits’ funded by Tribal Sub Plan, Ministry of Tribal Welfare, Govt of India is under progress. As a part of this project, every year, awareness programmes, hands-on trainings and distribution of postharvest machineries are being done. During this year also a series of events took place and the details are as follows:

       A Distribution Programme was conducted on 5th May 2018, which was graced by Sh. Govind Gaude, Minister for Art and Culture, Tribal welfare, Civil Supplies and Price Control, and Sh. Narendra K Sawaikar, Member of Parliament, South Goa. The farmer members of M/s. Shree Kamakshi SHG, Ward Namaswada, Village Cuncolim, Taluk Ponda were given away one complete set of processing machinery, the details of which are given below.

       Followed by this, a hands-on training programme was conducted to members of the group and also two more beneficiary groups viz. M/s. Jai Santoshi Maa SHG, Ward Ghadiwada, Village Surla and Shri Sateri NavDurga SHG, Ward Deulwada, Village Pali,, both from Taluka Bicholim. On this occasion, they were trained to operate jackfruit cutting machine, jackfruit chips cutter, Electric cabinet dryer, etc. Value added products like jackfruit chips, jackfruit pickle, jackfruit papad were also method demonstrated. Some of these machineries like kokum cutting macihine, hand operated jackfruit cutter, jackfruit cutter machine for chips, Electric dryer, Drying trays 5 no. and sealing machine were also distributed to them on the same day, so that they could start making use of them during the current season itself.

       Later on, a distribution programme was conducted at the institute, which was graced by Dr. Pramod Sawant, Hon. Speaker, Goa Legislative Assembly. The other machinery like Mixer, Utensils and cutlery, plastic sheets for drying, refractometer and Plastic drum (100 l) and Electronic balances were distributed by him on the occasion to the two groups. He emphasized upon effective utilization of technical support rendered by the organization. Dr. E.B.Chakurkar, Director (A), stressed upon the importance of value addition as an enterprise and also presented the welcome address. Dr. S.Priya Devi,PS (Horticulture-Fruit Science) explained the potentialities of jackfruit for processing and value addition. She also presented the details of support the institute has provided to the tribal farmers of Goa in the past, with respect to Value addition and processing. At the end, Dr. Mathala Juliet Gupta, TSP Co-ordinator proposed vote of thanks. And the programme came to an end with National anthem, followed by a group photo.
