ICAR-CCARI, Goa Organized Capacity Building Cum Distribution Programme of Backyard Poultry under STC at KVK- North Goa
ICAR-CCARI organized a one-day capacity-building programme on "Scientific Management of Backyard Poultry" at Krishi Vigyan Kendra-North Goa, Ela, Old Goa, on 25th November 2024, under the Scheduled Tribe Component, Govt. of India. Backyard poultry birds of the Kadaknath breed were distributed to 11 Scheduled Tribe farmers, including 8 female and 3 males from 2 villages of North Goa district: Carambolim and Diwar.
Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director of ICAR-CCARI, Goa, inaugurated the training program and encouraged farmers to adopt scientific poultry farming practices. He also advised them to implement effective marketing strategies to secure premium prices for eggs and poultry birds. Additionally, he distributed Kadaknath birds to all the participants.
Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK, welcomed the participants and provided valuable insights on poultry waste management. He emphasized the effective use of poultry waste as manure to enhance soil fertility and improve crop yields.
Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), ICAR-KVK, North Goa, delivered insightful lectures on key aspects of backyard poultry farming. He covered scientific feeding practices, optimal housing designs, and management strategies for Kadaknath poultry. The sessions also addressed nutrient requirements, feed formulation, disease management, and biosecurity to improve poultry health and productivity. Mr. Rahul Kumar, SMS (Agronomy), delivered a lecture on azolla cultivation and its use as feed for poultry birds. Furthermore, the participants were provided with 116 Kadaknath poultry birds. The program was coordinated by Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Mr. Rahul Kumar, and Mr. Vishwajeet Prajapati.
