ICAR-CCARI Promoting Asian Seabass Polyculture Through Field Experiments
The ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI) has taken significant strides in promoting the Asian Seabass polyculture methodology through various field experiments and farmer collaborations. Seabass polyculture is one of the institute's most prestigious cultural practices, successfully implemented along the coastal regions for the benefit of local fish farmers. The technology has demonstrated promising results in boosting fish production and is seen as a viable alternative to traditional farming methods. In its mission to expand and popularize this eco-friendly and farmer technique, ICAR-CCARI has adopted two farmers from Goa, Mr. Dilip Narulkar and Mr. Sarvesh Raghunath Deikar, for field demonstration. These farmers were provided with seeds and brooders of SIFS, tilapia, and Indian Major Carp (IMC) for stocking in Seabass polyculture ponds.
Scientists from ICAR-CCARI, explained the technical aspects and potential of Seabass polyculture compared to conventional farming methods. The scientists also emphasized the full technical support that ICAR-CCARI would offer throughout the culture period, ensuring that farmers would not only be well-informed but also well-equipped to manage their polyculture farms effectively. Additionally, the farmers received an on-site demonstration at the ICAR-CCARI fish farm, and were educated about the standard package of practices.
The farmers expressed their sincere gratitude to ICAR-CCARI for their guidance and support, and they pledged their full cooperation in future research and development efforts. This collaborative initiative is expected to open new avenues for the fish farming community, significantly enhancing productivity and sustainability in the region. The program was coordinated by Shri Trivesh Mayekar (Scientist, Fish Genetics and Breeding), Dr. Sreekanth GB (Senior Scientist, Fisheries Resource Management), and Mr. Melbin Lal (YP 2), highlighting the institute's commitment to advancing sustainable aquaculture practices in coastal regions. ICAR-CCARI will put their efforts into expanding the Seabass polyculture all along the coastal region.
