ICAR CCARI Organized Farmer's Exposure Visit to Ornamental Fish Culture Unit at Sawantwadi, Maharashtra

ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI) organized an exposure visit to the Ornamental Fish Culture Unit at Sawantwadi,  Maharashtra on 20^th March 2024, under the NABARD-funded project "Entrepreneurship Development and Livelihood Improvement through Demonstration and Training of Sustainable Ornamental Fish Culture in Goa". Ten members from four Self-Help Groups participated in the exposure visit, which took place at the progressive Ornamental Fish farm run by Mr. Rajesh Salgaonkar in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra. The Principal Investigator, Shri. Trivesh Mayekar, a Scientist (Fish Genetics and Breeding) at ICAR Old Goa, provided a brief introduction and explained the purpose of the exposure visit. The primary aim was to gain insights into developing an Ornamental Fish breeding unit through direct interaction with entrepreneurs. Mr. Rajesh Salgaonkar, a successful Ornamental Fish Entrepreneur and owner of the farm, shared his experiences and the challenges encountered in establishing the Ornamental Fish unit. He explained the basic requirements for ornamental fish farming and the small-scale start-ups that can be set up by the members in their house backyard.

Following the informative session led by Mr. Rajesh Salgaonkar, the members were fully engaged in an interactive session and hands-on practical section focused on the Ornamental Fish culture unit. This segment delved into various critical aspects such as water quality management, essential for maintaining a healthy aquatic environment; disease identification and treatment techniques, crucial for ensuring the well-being of the ornamental fish; proper medication usage to address any health concerns effectively; feeding management strategies tailored to the specific needs of different ornamental fish species; breeding methodologies aimed at promoting successful reproduction and population growth; insights into effective marketing strategies to promote ornamental fish products and meticulous packing techniques to ensure the safe transportation of ornamental fishes. During the visit to the ornamental hatchery facility, all members keenly observed and actively participated, gaining invaluable insights into the intricate methodology behind producing disease-free ornamental fishes. The facility showcased various species including Guppy, Molly, Koi carp, Goldfish, among others, highlighting the diverse range of ornamental fish cultivated and the meticulous care required for their successful breeding and maintenance.
