Field visit and interaction at Poyya fish farm in Thrissur, Kerala

 

    A field visit was carried out to Poyya fish farm (under the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Kerala) at Kodungallur (Thrissur coastal district of Kerala) on 25 August 2024 where the largest seed production unit of Pearlspot- Etroplus suratensis (a highly sought-after fish in the coastal region) is established. Three tier hatchery unit is established at the farm facility to facilitate multiple productions at a time. Apart from this unit, the farm also undertakes the culture Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) and Milk fish (Chanos chanos). Dr Sreekanth GB, Sr. Scientist from ICAR-CCARI highlighted the activities of the institute and assured collaboration for the seed production programme of the farm unit. He also interacted with the farmers at the farm regarding the seed availability and also the farming operations. He has also assured linking of the fish farmers of the coastal region with the fish farm for the supply of fish seeds. Shri Jayan P, Manager of the farm assured all technical and logistic support for the activities of CCARI in the coastal region.
