ICAR-KVK North Goa Conducted Training on Backyard Poultry Farming in Collaboration with ZAO Ponda
ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), North Goa, ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI) organized a one-day training on ‘Scientific management of backyard poultry’ in collaboration with the Zonal Agricultural Office (ZAO) Ponda, South Goa on 26-11-2024. The program aimed to promote scientific poultry farming practices among rural communities.
Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science) and In-Charge Senior Scientist and Head of KVK, discussed the scientific management of backyard poultry. He provided a detailed explanation of various poultry breeds developed by ICAR, including Grampriya, Srinidhi, and others. Additionally, he elaborated on the principles of scientific housing, feeding, and the marketing of eggs and meat, emphasizing their role in generating additional income and ensuring nutritional security.
Mr. Rahul Kumar, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy), provided an in-depth explanation on the feeding of azolla to backyard poultry birds and its benefits in enhancing poultry nutrition. He also elaborated on the cultivation practices of azolla, highlighting its high nutritional value as a supplement to the poultry diet. Ms. Nivya K. R., Subject Matter Specialist (Floriculture and Landscaping), explained the composition of poultry manure, its importance, and its application in growing marigold.
Mr. Rahul Kulkarni, ACTO (Soil Science), explained the effective waste management of poultry manure. He highlighted various methods for managing and utilizing poultry waste to enhance soil fertility. A total of 35 farmers (34 females and 1 male), including 3 officials from ZAO Ponda, participated in the program. The event was coordinated by Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Mr. Rahul Kumar, Ms. Nivya K. R., Mr. Rahul Kulkarni, and Mr. Vishwajeet Prajapati.
