ICAR-CCARI Organized Training-cum-Demonstration under Tribal Sub Plan of AICRP on Pig
ICAR-CCARI, Goa organized one day Training-cum- Demonstration on “Scientific Pig Farming” on 6 September 2023 under Tribal Sub Plan of AICRP on Pig. Total 14 participants (8 from Uttara Kannada, Karnataka and 6 from Goa) attended the training. In the inaugural address, Dr Parveen Kumar, Director highlighted the importance of scientific pig farming that can be economical to farmers by adopting the low-cost package of practices in the farming. He emphasized the farmers should take proper managemental practices to reduce mortality in the farm through preventive health measures and proper shelter management against heat stress. Dr Shirish D. Narnaware (Section in-charge, Animal and Fisheries Science) briefed the participants about the backyard and organized commercial piggery farming. The lectures were delivered on care and management of pigs, housing, feeding, reproductive care and artificial insemination, health care and disease prevention in pigs and processing of pork by the scientists Dr Nibedita Nayak, Dr Gokuldas P.P., Dr Susitha Rajkumar and Dr R. Solomon Rajkumar. One practical demonstration conducted on elite germplasm selection for breeding, routine farm management, preparation and storage of feed, care of farrowing sows and piglets, deworming and vaccination. An interactive session was also conducted with the scientists and farmer trainees, followed by certificate distribution. At the end of the programme, piglets and feed were supplied to all the beneficiary farmers. Dr Amiya Ranjan Sahu (PI, AICRP on Pig) and Dr. Shirish Narnaware (Senior Scientist) coordinated for the training programme. Mr. Vithal Naik (YP-1), Ms. Vedika Vivekananda Kudalkar (YP-1) and Ms. Tejasvi Pednekar (Lab Assistant) had associated with registration of participants, hall arrangements and other activities during the training and distribution of inputs.
