ICAR-KVK North Goa conducted Training on 'Scientific Pig Farming' and Input Distribution Program at KVK Old Goa

The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), North Goa, ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), Goa, conducted a training on "Scientific Pig Farming" and an input distribution program on 30th December 2024.

Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director of ICAR CCARI Goa, inaugurated the program and encouraged farmers to adopt climate-resilient pig breeds like the Goya, developed by ICAR-CCARI Goa, which thrive in coastal climates and offer better growth, reproduction, and disease resistance. During the event, 20 piglets were distributed to five farmers under the KVK Frontline Demonstration on Goya Pigs.

Dr. Shirish Narnaware, Senior Scientist in Veterinary Pathology, discussed viral and bacterial infections in pigs, focusing on diseases such as classical swine fever, African swine fever, and swine brucellosis, and emphasized disease prevention, vaccination, and biosecurity. Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu, Scientist in Animal Breeding and Genetics, highlighted the importance of breeding management for enhancing productivity and health in pig farming.

Dr. Udharwar S.V., SMS (Animal Science) and Head of KVK North Goa, explained scientific principles of piggery management, including housing, feeding strategies, and healthcare practices. He also discussed the formulation of balanced pig feed and key healthcare management practices. Mr. Rahul Kumar, SMS (Agronomy), gave a session on the effective management of pig manure, focusing on its use as a natural fertilizer to improve soil fertility and support organic vegetable growth.  A total of 14 farmers (11 males and 03 females) attended the training, which was coordinated by Dr. Udharwar S.V., Mr. Rahul Kumar, Mr. Rahul Kulkarni, and Mr. Vishwajeet Prajapati.
