ICAR-CCARI, Goa established a small-scale demonstration unit of ornamental fish culture in Parra, Goa

 

    ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI), Goa established a small-scale ornamental fish culture unit for the skill development of SHG at Parra village in North Goa under the project "Entrepreneurship Development and Livelihood Improvement through Demonstration and Training of Sustainable Ornamental Fish Culture in Goa" funded by NABARD on 19th  April 2024. The function was graced by the presence of Dr. Parveen Kumar (Director of the institute), and Shri. Trivesh S Mayekar and Dr Sreekanth GB (Scientists from Fisheries section). Smt. Frida Oliveira (RDA), Smt. Dalfina Soares (Secretary of Our Lady of Fatima Women’s Self Help Group), Mr. Bazilio (Ward member), and Smt. Threza Anes (Member of SHG and Coordinator of the Demonstration Unit) along with other SHG members participated in the event. Around twenty women farmers from Parra will benefit from this unit.

    Shri. Trivesh Mayekar extended a warm welcome to all the dignitaries and participants. He highlighted the objective of the project and the plan of action along with ICAR activities in promoting entrepreneurship development in Goa. Dr. Sreekanth G.B explained the importance of ornamental fisheries and highlighted the potential of ornamental fish culture as a livelihood option. Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director emphasized upon the role of the local community and Self Help Group in promoting ornamental fish culture as an income source during his inaugural address.  He has also assured full technical support from the institute to the Self Help Group and other farmers in the region. The Institute encouraged Self Help Group to set up more Ornamental Fish units in the region promoting youth and women involvement in entrepreneurship. Further, SHG members expressed gratitude for the support from ICAR and NABARD. Farmer scientist interaction was also conducted for future plans of action. The institute looks forward to sustained collaboration with stakeholders to further enhance community well-being through entrepreneurial initiatives in ornamental fish culture.The program was coordinated by Shri Trivesh S Mayekar, Dr. Sreekanth GB, Mr. Borges BB (project assistant), and Melbin Lal (young professional).
