ICAR CCARI Organized Farmer's Exposure Visit to Ornamental Fish Culture Unit

 

ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI) organized an Exposure visit to the Ornamental Fish Culture Units at Cumbarjua, Goa on 19th January 2024, Under NABARD funded project "Entrepreneurship Development and Livelihood Improvement through Demonstration and Training of Sustainable Ornamental Fish Culture in Goa". Around 20 women members of Laxmi Ravalnath Self Help group, Assonara (SHG) participated in the exposure visit, which took place at the Ornamental Fish Culture Unit at Cumbarjua and Panjim Fish Aquarium unit.

The Principal Investigator, Shri. Trivesh Mayekar, a Scientist (Fish Genetics and Breeding) at ICAR Old Goa, provided a brief introduction and purpose of exposure visit. The primary aim was to gain insights into developing an Ornamental Fish unit through direct interaction with entrepreneurs. Mr. Sahil Thakur, an Ornamental Fish Entrepreneur from the Cumbarjua group, shared his experiences and the challenges encountered in establishing the Ornamental Fish unit. Mrs. Hema Bugde, a member of Laxmi Ravalnath SHG and the Coordinator of the Demonstration Unit in Assonora, shared her one-month experience with the newly established unit.Subsequently, there was an interactive session on Ornamental Fish culture unit like Ornamental fish tank fabrication, water quality management, disease identification and treatment, medication usage, feeding management, breeding methodologies, marketing and packing of ornamental fishes. Following this, the visit to Panjim Aquarium provided SHG members with insights into the methodology of displaying different commercial Ornamental fishes in the retail market, their retail market prices, aquatic plants and different aquarium accessories.The visit was Co-ordinated by Shri. Trivesh Mayekar, Scientist (FGB), Dr. Sreekanth G.B. Sr. Scientist (FRM) and Mr. B. Bjoy Borges, Field Assistant.
