Training programme on “Ornamental Fish Culture” organised by ICAR – CCARI
ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute organized a one-day training on 27th March 2023 about "Ornamental Fish culture” funded by NABARD. Fourteen trainees in total attended this ornamental fish-training programme. During his inaugural address, Director, Dr. Parveen Kumar, explained the importance of Fisheries and Aquaculture for entrepreneurship and livelihood promotion in India and for providing food and nutrition security through the Fisheries sector. Moreover, he emphasizes the importance of Ornamental Fish culture to Goa's farmers and stakeholders for revenue generation. Shri Trivesh Mayekar, Scientist (Fish Genetics and Breeding), discussed the scope and international status of Ornamental fish culture and the need for its promotion in Goa. Furthermore, he stated that a series of capacity-building and demonstration programs would be implemented to promote ornamental fish culture among self-help groups. During the training, several lectures were conducted by experts in ornamental fish culture including lectures on Ornamental Fish Farming: Status and Scope, Commercially important ornamental fishes, Ornamental fish breeding methods, Disease and feeding Management in Ornamental fishes, Major Common Commercial Ornamental fishes of Goa and Entrepreneurship development and livelihood improvement through ornamental fish culture. Also, the course included a demonstration on tank fabrication, tank setup and maintenance, aquascaping, ornamental fish feed preparation, larval rearing, and ornamental fish breeding and larval rearing. It was also arranged for participants to visit the Institute's aquarium and aquaculture farm. In the valedictory function, trainees provided feedback regarding the program and the knowledge they gained. Additionally, the trainees had the opportunity to visit the demonstration unit on Diwar Island and obtain an understanding of its operation. Shri Trivesh Suresh Mayeker, Scientist at ICAR-CCARI, Goa, and Mr. Sharan Sawal, Field Assistant, coordinated this training. Shri Vishwajeet Prajapati provided technical support during the training.
