ICAR-CCARI in association with NABARD organized a capacity-building programme on ornamental fish culture
ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute organized a one-day training on 13 February 2024 about "Ornamental Fish cultureā funded by NABARD. A total of 15 trainees (including 10 women) from Goa attended the training programme. During his inaugural address, the Director in charge, Dr. A. Raizada, explained the importance of Fisheries and Aquaculture for entrepreneurship and livelihood promotion and for providing food and nutrition security. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of ornamental fish culture in Goa for livelihood and revenue generation. Dr. Shirish D Narnaware, Senior Scientist and Section in-charge, Animal and Fishery Science encouraged the participants to start backyard ornamental fish units in this state. Shri Trivesh Mayekar, Scientist (Fish Genetics and Breeding), discussed the scope and status of ornamental fish culture and the need for its promotion in Goa. Furthermore, he stated that a series of capacity-building and demonstration programs would be implemented to promote ornamental fish culture among self-help groups. ICAR CCARI has taken the lead in conserving indigenous ornamental fishes of Goa by developing breeding protocols for selected fish species. During the training, several lectures were delivered by experts in ornamental fish culture including lectures on Ornamental Fish Farming: Status and Scope, commercially important ornamental fishes, Ornamental fish breeding methods, Disease and feeding Management in Ornamental fishes, Major Common Commercial Ornamental fishes of Goa and Entrepreneurship development and livelihood improvement through ornamental fish culture. Also, the training included a demonstration of aquarium tank fabrication and maintenance, aqua scaping, ornamental fish feed preparation, larval rearing, induced breeding technology for indigenous ornamental fishes. The participants were exposed to Institute's aquarium complex, hatchery facility and aquaculture farm. In the valedictory function, the trainees provided feedback regarding the knowledge they gained in ornamental fish culture. Shri. Trivesh Suresh Mayekar, Dr. Sreekanth GB, (Scientists), Mr. Melbin Lal, and Mr. Borges BB (Project staff) co-ordinated the training programme.
