Training and demonstration programme on ornamental fish culture
A one-day training and demonstration programme on “Ornamental Fisheries and Fabrication of Aquarium tanks” was organized on 12th October, 2021 in collaboration with the Directorate of Fisheries, Govt. of Goa. A total of 20 participants attended the programme. A lecture was delivered on “Ornamental Fisheries: Turning Hobby into a Professional Career” to the participants. Various aspects related to ornamental fisheries were described like global and Indian overview of ornamental fish industry, aqua-scaping, export and import data, commercially important ornamental fish species of freshwater and marine water, local indigenous ornamental fish varieties of Goa and their breeding protocols, the constraints, opportunities and future prospects in the ornamental fisheries sector. All trainees were exposed to the ornamental fish breeding and rearing units of the institute. Demonstration on low cost ornamental fish tank culture and ornamental pellet feed preparation were conducted. All participants were explained about importance of public aquarium and aquascaping. In addition, fabrication of aquarium tank was shown to participants. Experimental pond aquaculture and integrated fish farming were also described. The training was co-ordinated by Mr. Trivesh Mayekar, Scientist (FGB) and Dr. Sreekanth GB, Scientist (FRM), Fisheries Section of ICAR-CCARI, Goa.
