NICRA Focus Group Workshop on “Climate Change and Coastal Aquaculture – Impacts, Adaptations and Mitigations for Resilience”

National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture Focus Group Workshop on “Climate Change and Coastal Aquaculture – Impacts, Adaptations and Mitigations for Resilience” was organised by ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA) in collaboration with ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI) on 11th March, 2015. There were about 40 participants representing the fishermen, fish farmers, aqua culturists and department officials from Goa. Dr. Muralidhar, Dr. Kumaran and Dr. Syamadayal, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIBA gave an introduction about the NICRA project and importance of awareness on climate change among fish farmers and fishermen. Dr. Narendra Pratap Singh, Director, ICAR-CCARI during his address to the participants emphasized on the climate change and its impacts on the agriculture and fisheries sector of Goa. Dr. Shamila Monteiro, Director, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Goa urged the whole hearted participation from fishermen and fish farmers for new initiatives in the fisheries sector to combat the impacts from climate change. Dr. Balasubramaniam, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIBA, sensitized the audience about the research and extension activities in the field of brackishwater aquaculture mediated through CIBA.  During the technical session, the participants gave their feedback on their perceptions and auto-adaptations of climate change in Goa. Further, there were deliberations on “crab culture”, “shrimp farming” and “risk assessment and good management practices in brackishwater aquaculture” by experts from CIBA. Mrs. Manju Lekshmi and Mr. Sreekanth G. B. were the local coordinators of the one day workshop.
