ICAR-CCARI, Goa and ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal jointly organized a Field Survey and Farmers Interaction Meet

 

ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa and ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal jointly organized a Field Survey and farmer interaction programme in North and South Goa districts during 8-9th June, 2024. This programme was organized under the Network Project on Animal Genetic Resources (AnGRs) funded by ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal, Haryana.

Dr. B.P. Mishra, Director, ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal and Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, Goa along with the team of scientists from both the Institutes visited various farmer fields, surveyed indigenous animal species including cattle, buffalo, pig, poultry and interacted with the farmers in Carambolim, Khorjuve, Shikeri, Aldona and Pernem areas of North Goa, Agaciam, Verna and Vasco areas of South Goa.

Scientists team also visited Gomantak Gausevak Mahasangh Goshala, Shikeri which houses over 4,000 native cattle including Shweta Kapila, Konkan Kapila, Gir and other non-descripts with rare colour variants like tiger striped, mottled, spotted, cattle etc. Directors of both the Institutes also felicitated the head of the Goshala who received “Breed Conservation Award 2023” under institutional category for Shweta Kapila cattle breed. The team created much needed awareness on sustainable management of indigenous AnGRs and regional livestock biodiversity and provided guidance on different aspects of animal breed registration, breed improvement and scientific livestock rearing.

Team also visited farmers in Aldona, who were beneficiaries under NABARD project on poultry, interacted and collected feedback on institute technologies and chicks distributed to them. Team could also identify a distinct strain of dog called Loti locally known for sniffing skill, hunting ability, athleticism, stamina and agility in Hasapur village of Pernem Taluka. Veterinary medicines and feed supplements were also distributed during the programme. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Amiya Ranjan Sahu, Dr. Gokuldas P.P., Dr. Shirish D. Narnaware and Dr. Sanjaykumar Udharwar. Project staff Mr. Kiran Hangaragi and Mr. Narayan Gawas assisted in overall organization of the programme.
