ICAR-CCARI organized a field day cum farmer interface at Mulki, Karnataka under SCSP
ICAR-CCARI, Goa organized a field day cum farmer interface and input distribution programme under SCSP at Mulki, Karnataka on 21 September 2024. Dr. Sreekanth GB, (Senior Scientist (FRM), ICAR-CCARI), Shri. Ravi K, and Shri. Hemaraj (progressive fishermen and fish farmers from Karnataka), 10 fishermen/fish farmers participated in the programme. While addressing the fishermen and farmers, Dr. Sreekanth GB highlighted the importance of the scheme and ICAR-CCARI is making their continuous efforts to improve the income and livelihood of the fishermen and farmers in the coastal region. He has also appreciated the farmers/fishermen for their efforts to improve fisheries resources through cage culture, crab culture, bivalve culture and also promoting sustainable fishing practices. Shri. Ravi K, progressive fish farmer urged the fishermen, farmers, research organizations and developmental agencies to initiate need-based research and on-field experiments to improve the fish culture and fishing techniques. It was also recommended by the experts to form a self-help-group of fishermen and farmers from the region to promote integrated farming (including agriculture, processing and livestock farming) and value addition. The women farmers were also encouraged to take up poultry, duck and goat farming to increase their livelihood options and income sources. Further, HDPE barrels, and fish tanks were distributed to five farmers including two women, who practice bivalve collection and farming in Mulki estuary. Shri. Hemraj, a progressive fish farmer from Mulki proposed vote of thanks and assured all technical and maintenance support for the farming activities of the women group. Dr Sreekanth GB, Dr Trivesh Mayekar (Scientist (Fish genetics and breeding), ICAR-CCARI), and Mr. Melbin Lal coordinated the programme.
