Shree Ann: Role of millets in global nutritional security, climate adaptation, health and prosperity
ICAR – Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI), Goa, as part of International Year of Millets (IYOM) - 2023, organized a lecture on Shree Ann: Role of millets in global nutritional security, climate adaptation, health and prosperity, was delivered by Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, to the 55 students and faculty members of College of Agriculture, Govt. of Goa, at Sal Training Hall, KVK- North Goa, on 29/04/2023. During the lecture, he spoke about major millets viz., jowar, bajra, finger millet and minor millets viz. proso, foxtail, little, barnyard, browntop and kodo millet, their national and international scenario, their role in nutritional security and health benefits especially their role in weight and diabetes management due to their lower glycemic index and higher satiety index. The climate resilience besides lower water footprint, 2.5 times lower than rice are the most important characters of these crops and hence they are now called as ‘super food’. As the demand for millets is increasing, he urged the farmers to grow more millets for better income and livelihood security. Dr. Suresh Kunkalikar, Principal, Goa College of Agriculture, in his welcome address, briefed about millet status in Goa state and future prospects.
