Field visit and Interaction with the fish farmer at Loutlim, Goa

    A field visit and interaction was organized with Shri. Revson, a fish farmer follows pond culture and cage culture of fishes on 6 November 2024. The farmer currently operates the farming of seabass in cages (5 × 5 m) and extensive fish culture of brackishwater fishes in large coastal ponds (22 ha). He also wishes to expand the number of cages and also to start the farming of pearlspot following enclosure/pen culture methods. The standard package of practices regarding cage culture of seabass, pearlspot farming and extensive fish culture in brackishwater ponds were shared with the farmer. Dr Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (FRM) from CCARI also discussed the possibility of trials on the novel crab fattening method, which can be practiced near the cages for improving the farm income. The farmer expressed his interest to take up the farming in the coming season. The region is also famous for paddy cultivation using the local varieties. The possibility of the introduction of the salt-tolerant rice varieties developed by the institute was also discussed. The farmer assured all field level support for the research and extension activities of the institute.
