ICAR-KVK, CCARI Goa organize Scientific Management of Goats
The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, CCARI, North Goa, organized a training on Scientific Management of Goats on 15 January 2025 at KVK Old Goa. The event was inaugurated by Dr Parveen Kumar, Director of ICAR-CCARI, Goa, who highlighted the importance of climate-resilient goat breeds like Konkan Kanyal, Black Bengal, and Tellicherry. He encouraged farmers to integrate goat farming with agriculture to generate supplementary income and promote sustainability. He distributed four pairs of Black Bengal goats to four farmers of North Goa district as part of KVK's frontline demonstration to empower local farmers.
Dr N. Bommayasamy, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK, welcomed the participants and enlightened the effective utilization of waste management in goat farming, emphasizing its role in maintaining an eco-friendly farm environment. The training featured expert sessions by distinguished scientists. Dr Shirish Narnaware, Senior Scientist (Veterinary Pathology), delivered a detailed lecture on bacterial and viral diseases affecting goats, covering symptoms, transmission, prevention, and control measures. Dr. Susitha Rajkumar, Senior Scientist (Veterinary Pathology), provided insights on biosecurity practices to prevent disease entry and safeguard farm health.
Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), highlighted scientific farming practices such as low-cost goat housing, feeding techniques, and hands-on training in preparing low-cost concentrate feeds, silage, and cultivating hybrid Napier grass. Mr. Rahul Kumar, SMS (Agronomy), explained the importance of fodder cultivation and offered guidance on growing high-quality fodders for optimal goat nutrition.
A total of 18 farmers, including two women and 16 men, participated, gained practical skills and knowledge to improve their goat farming practices. This training provided theoretical insights and hands-on experiences, equipping farmers to succeed in sustainable, profitable goat farming. The program was coordinated by Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Dr. N. Bommayasamy, Mr. Rahul Kumar, and Mr. Vishwajeet Prajapati.
