ICAR-CCARI celebrated National Fish Farmers Day

On the occasion of National Fish Farmers Day, ICAR-CCARI, Goa organized a training cum capacity building program on Induced breeding of Indian Major Carps (IMC) and Small Indigenous Fishes (SIF) for seed Production and promotion of sustainable aquaculture in Goa on 10th July 2024. A total of 30 participants covering fish farmers, entrepreneurs, and students attended the training. Director of ICAR-CCARI, Dr. Parveen Kumar, highlighted the importance of fish culture in India, particularly in Goa, for entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities. Dr. Shirish D Narnaware, Senior Scientist and Section In-charge of Animal and Fishery Science, encouraged the participants to learn the technology in detail and utilize the opportunity provided to them. Dr. Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (Fisheries Resource Management), explained the significance of National Fish Farmers Day and the hard work of Dr. Hiralal Chaudhari, who developed the induced breeding technology in India. Shri. Trivesh Mayekar Scientist briefed about importance of induced breeding of Indian major carps and seed production, nursery rearing for promoting sustainable aquaculture in Goa. Additionally he highlighted utilization of Small indigenous fishes for nutritional food security.

The participants were given hands-on training on induced breeding and nursery rearing of IMC and SIF, feeding and disease management, and fish farm management practices. Each participant was given the opportunity to perform hormonal injections and handle fish during the induced breeding process. Shri. Trivesh Mayekar explained the post-injection procedures and the importance of live feed in larval rearing, demonstrating different live feed preparations and feeding methods. Later, trainees were also exposed to seabass nursery rearing, seabass grow-out culture ponds, duck cum fish cage unit, and other aquaculture facilities of CCARI. The training program was coordinated by Shri. Trivesh Suresh Mayekar, Dr. Sreekanth G.B. (Scientists), and Mr. Melbin Lal (YP II).
