Interaction with students on ornamental fish culture at Njarakkal, Ernakulam
An interaction was organized with three Msc. Aquaculture students at Njarakkal, Ernakulam coastal district of Kerala on 17 November 2024. The students (two male and one female) belong to scheduled caste category and expressed interest in taking up ornamental fish culture as an income generation activity. Njarakkal is coastal village, which is bestowed with inland water resources and fish culture and however, currently experiences threats from extreme weather events and frequent flooding events. Dr Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (FRM) shared the packages of practices for the ornamental fish culture to the students and they were encouraged to take this as a subsidiary income generation activity. He has also suggested them for undergoing training at ornamental fish farms of progressive farmers near to Ernakulum. Tarpaulin fish tanks and HDPE barrels were distributed to them for starting small units of ornamental fish culture.
