ICAR-CCARI organised capacity building cum demonstration programme on crab fattening at Kochi, Kerala

 

As a continuation of the field demonstrations of the novel crab fattening methodology, ICAR-CCARI in collaboration with Stem Systems Pvt. Ltd and Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, Kochi organised a capacity building cum and demonstration programme on 29 June, 2024 at Cheppanam, Kochi. The training programme covered sessions on mud crab farming, biology, breeding and health management. The recent advances in mud crab fattening technology using designed FRP barrels was demonstrated to farmers in the fish cage cum crab fattening unit established in the Vembanad estuary near Cheppanam. About 57 participants including 5 women (farmers, entrepreneurs and students) from different parts of Kerala, and Karnataka participated in the training programme. Dr Sreekanth GB, Sr. Scientist (FRM) from ICAR-CCARI delivered a lecture and field demonstration on the mud crab biology and farming methods. Mr Arun Das delivered the lecture on recent advances in mud crab farming and the novel crab fattening technology. The participants were exposed to the cage culture, and crab fattening units and given practical demonstration in identification of crab, sexual dimorphism, water crabs, feeding, handling crab, size grading, detecting deformities, packing and marketing. The programme was coordinated by Mr Arun Das, Dr Sreekanth GB and Ms Aswathy T.
