World Coconut day celebration at Goa center on 02.09.2024
The World Coconut Day was celebrated at Sanquelim North Goa District Goa state by the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Palms –Goa Centre and Government College of Arts, Commerce & Science, Sanquelim. Fifty two (38 women and 14 men) participants from the college participated in the event. A special lecture was delivered by Dr. V Arunachalam, Principal Scientist (Horticulture) and Scientist in charge of AICRP (Palms) Goa center, on the coconut for circular economy, partnerships, coconut management practices and sharing of experiences.During the lecture Dr. Arunachalam briefed the participants on the genesis of World Coconut day, role in circular economy, partnerships and networking with state and central agencies, farmers and entrepreneurs, importance of coconut crop, varieties, selection of seedlings, and nutrient management, digital phenotyping, use of ion meters, pests and diseases, harvest stages and shared how to enhance the productivity of coconut. Many exhibits related to coconut varieties, coconut products including broom, coir pith briquette, intercrops for coconut such as sapota, heliconia, etc.,. Queries by participant’s s on nursery entrepreneurships and schemes of Coconut Development Board were also addressed. The event was coordinated by Dr. Nisha V Kevat Assistant Professor Botany Department, Government College of Arts, Commerce & Science, Sanquelim and Dr V Arunachalam of ICAR CCARI Old Goa.
