  Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & DG (ICAR), New Delhi, visited rice salinity experimental trials at Chorao Island, North Goa

 

    Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, visited rice salinity breeding experimental trials at Chorao Island on 9th September, 2016. He was accompanied by Shri. Chhabilendra Roul IAS, Additional Secretary, (DARE) & Secretary, (ICAR), Dr. J. S. Sandhu, DDG (Crop Science), Dr. Ravindra Babu, Director (IIRR, Hyderabad).  The visit was co-cordinated by Dr. Narendar Pratap Singh, Director ICAR, CCARI. Director briefed Director General about the rice cultivation scenario in coastal saline areas of Goa and adjoining regions. Dr. Manohara, K, K., scientist in plant breeding explained Hon’ble Director General, about the experiments and trials laid out under different projects.  Director General appreciated the choice of site, being an ideal location for conducting trials and also the progress in research projects.  He advised to include wild rice collections from coastal saline areas for future crossing programmes and also suggested to use lines possessing dual or triple genes having tolerance to salinity, submergenece / elongation, which can surpass multiple stresses prevailing in most of the coastal saline areas of the region.
