ICAR-CCARI organized an awareness-cum-distribution programme of fish traps under SCSP

    An awareness- cum-distribution programme of fish traps was organized on March 5, 2024, at Betqui village in Ponda, Goa, under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan, Govt. of India. A total of 20 beneficiaries were present during program. Dr. Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (Fisheries Resources Management) and Coordinator of SCSP, highlighted the importance of using sustainable fish harvesting systems in the estuaries of Goa. Fishing trap is a convenient-sustainable-ecofriendly method of fish catch. A trap suitable for use in the estuaries of Goa was prepared by ICAR-CCARI and distributed to the beneficiaries during the programme. Also posters displaying the fishes of Goa were also distributed among the beneficiaries to provide awareness about the fish diversity and conservation. The operation of the trap was displayed to the beneficiaries and Dr Sreekanth urged the women also to use the trap along with fishermen, as it is of light weight and easy to handle. Dr. Sreekanth GB, Shri. Trivesh Mayekar (Scientist (Fish genetics and breeding)), Mr. Melbin Lal (Young professional, ICAR-CCARI) and Mr. Borges BB (Project assistant, ICAR-CCARI) co-ordinated the programme.
