ICAR-CCARI, Goa organised a capacity building cum distribution programme of backyard poultry under SCSP at Karwar, Karnataka

ICAR-CCARI organised a one-day capacity building programme on "Scientific Management of Backyard Poultry" at Halekote, Karwar, Uttara Kannada coastal district in Karnataka, on 21 October 2024 under SCSP programme, Govt. of India.  The backyard poultry birds of Gramapriya breed were distributed to 20 SC women farmers in two villages; Halekote and Wailwada. The programme was organised in collaboration with ATMA, Karwar unit.

Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), ICAR-KVK, North Goa delivered a series of comprehensive lectures that encompassed critical aspects of backyard poultry farming. He effectively created awareness regarding the principles of scientific feeding regimens, optimal housing designs, and best management practices tailored for Gramapriya-backyard poultry birds. The sessions included discussions on nutrient requirements, feed formulation, disease management, and biosecurity measures, which are essential for enhancing poultry health and productivity.

    Furthermore, the participants were provided with 160 number of two-month-old Gramapriya backyard poultry birds. This initiative not only furnished the farm women with practical resources but also empowered them to apply the knowledge gained during the training. By integrating scientific methodologies into their poultry management practices, the participants were better positioned to improve their livelihoods, increase productivity, and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices within their communities. The program was coordinated by Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar Vithalrao, SCSP Co-Nodal Officer and Dr. Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (FRM) and Nodal Officer for SCSP.
