Skill development training on Scientific Management of Backyard Poultry Farming

    As part of 100 days program, ICAR – Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa, ICAR – CCARI, Goa, conducted five days skill development training on “Scientific Management of Backyard Poultry Farming”  from 26 to 30 August 2024 for the farmers of Bardez taluka at St. Michael Church Hall, Anjuna, in collaboration with ZAO Bardez and ATMA, North Goa. Hon’ble Smt. Delilaha Lobo,  MLA of Siolim Constituency, Goa, was the Chief Guest of the valedictory function.  She urged that farmers utilize the expert services of ICAR to increase the weight and quantity of eggs produced by the improved varieties of backyard poultry birds. This practice not only enhances the livelihood of marginal farmers but also ensures nutritional security. She advocated raising a small number of backyard poultry in addition to agricultural farming to increase egg and chicken production to make Goa Swayampurna. She awarded certificates to each participant who participated in the training. Guest of Honour Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director of ICAR-CCARI, Goa, urged farmers to adopt the scientific practices in backyard poultry farming to get premium prices for the eggs and meat. He briefed the per capita availability of eggs and poultry meat and way to meet out the demand and supply of poultry products.  During the training program, experts from ICAR-KVK and ICAR-CCARI delivered lecture on improved poultry birds suitable for coastal region, housing management, care and management of chicks, grower, layer birds, backyard poultry waste management practices, feeding management, azolla production, low cost poultry feed preparation, standard bio-security principles and procedures, integration of backyard poultry in home stead garden, vaccination and deworming scheduling, major disease management. Quality egg and meat production and its value addition and bankable project preparation, record keeping in poultry farming. Fifty nine farmers and farm women  (39 male and 20 female) participated and benefited from the program.  Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar proposed a vote of thanks to conclude the program after Dr. N.Bommayasamy had previously welcomed the audience.  Dr. Udharwar Sanjaykumar V.,  Dr. N.
