Aqua Goa Mega Fish Festival-2016 at Navelim
Fisheries section of ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute has actively participated with a scientific exhibition stall in the Third Aqua Goa Mega Fish Festival-2016 organised by Directorate of Fisheries, Govt. of Goa in collaboration with the National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad at Navelim from 7th to 10th January, 2016. Hon. Deputy Chief Minister of Goa, Shri. Francis D’Souza inaugurated the four days mega event in the presence of Hon. Fisheries minister, Shri. Avertano Furtado, Shri. Digambar Kamat (MLA, Margao) and Shri. Caitano Silva (MLA, Benaulim). The Deputy Chief Minister during his address remarked that fishing has been a major and important economic activity for a sizeable section of the people in Goa and the state will address the issues and challenges in the sector strategically. The moto of the festival is to promote Goa’s rich fish culture and fishing industry and to create awareness among the general public. The festival has provided a common platform for stakeholders to help build a sustainable fisheries sector and to form a bond between the traditional fishing industry and a technology-driven industry, which will benefit the fishing community.
During this occasion, stripped grey mullet, Mugil cephalus commonly known as “Shevto” was declared as the state fish for Goa. A report with recommendations on state fish was compiled and submitted by Fisheries Section of ICAR-CCARI. There were seminars on the issues, challenges and way forward for the fisheries sector of Goa. A detailed presentation on “Opportunities in Ornamental Fish Farming” was delivered by Mrs. Manju Lekshmi N, Scientist (FRM) of ICAR-CCARI. The fisheries section of ICAR-CCARI displayed posters representing their research and extension activities in the stall. The Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Goa, Mrs. Shamila Monteiro appreciated the efforts of Director, ICAR-CCARI, Dr. Narendra Pratap Singh and the scientists especially for releasing posters on fisheries resources of Goa during the festival. Mrs. Manju Lekshmi N and Mr. Sreekanth GB, Scientist (FRM) co-ordinated the arrangements for the exhibition.
