ICAR-CCARI, Goa observed the “World Anti-microbial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week” during 18-24th November, 2024

    To mark the global campaign on “World Anti-microbial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week” from 18-24th November of every year, ICAR-CCARI, Goa organized an awareness programme on AMR on 25th November, 2024 for all the staff members of the institute. The aim of the programme was to improve awareness and understanding of AMR and encourage best practices among the public and stakeholders to reduce the further emergence and spread of AMR. During the programme Dr. Shirish D. Narnaware, Senior Scientist and Section In-charge (Animal and Fisheries Science) gave an overview and a brief presentation on “Anti-microbial Resistance: A One Health Perspective” and covered wide aspects on AMR spread, mechanism of resistance, impact on human and animal health, and ways to manage the spread of AMR by one health approach. This was followed by an interactive session wherein it was opined that research need to be conducted on detection of antimicrobial residues in soil, plant and environment in addition to animal and fish products sold in the market so as to check the sources of AMR. In his concluding remarks Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI emphasised that AMR is one of the major public health problems, especially in developing countries like India, where antibiotics are easily available. He also urged to avoid underdosing and overuse of antibiotics which is the root cause of the AMR. He added that a proper public awareness of antibiotic resistance is the key to address the AMR issue. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Shirish D. Narnaware (PI) and Dr. Susitha Rajkumar (Co-PI) under All India Network Project on AMR.
