Farmer Training Programme on Artificial Insemination in Pigs
A two day training program for pig growing farmers on “Artificial
Insemination in Pigs” was conducted during 17th and 18th August 2016 at
ICAR- Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Ela, Old-Goa.
This was a part of DBT Project -Augmentation of rural pig production for
socio-economic upliftment of poor through Artificial Insemination. Total
of 12 progressive pig farmers from Goa and Karnataka, attended this
training program. Entire aspects of scientific pig rearing was explained
to the farmers. Dr. E. B. Chakurkar, PI and Coordinator conducted the
training,. The training session started with introductory lecture on
Scientific Pig Farming, its importance, advance technologies in piggery
and AI in Pigs. Dr. P. P. Gokuldas, Scientist Animal Reproduction,
discussed about the Reproduction part like Estrous detection, Estrous
Synchronization and Artificial Insemination. Dr. Chetan Kumar,
Scientist, VPH, gave a lecture on Hygiene in Piggery. He talked about
maintaining good hygiene for both animals and personnel working in the
piggery along the surrounding environment, adverse effect of bad hygiene
etc. Dr. Shivasharanappa N. Scientist, VPH elaborated the diseases in
Pigs, its causes, symptoms and diagnosis. This was followed by the
practical where farmers were exposed to detect estrous and its various
stages, perfect stage of estrus with respect to undertake AI and also
actual Artificial Insemination process. They were given hands on
experience in doing AI. Demonstration on semen collection from boar and
its processing was shown to the farmers. Training was concluded with
panel discussion in the presence of Dr. N. P. Singh Director, ICAR-CCARI,
where he encouraged farmers to take up Piggery with advance technologies
and also to form farmers group.
