TSP Sponsored Training Programme on “Adoption of Improved Technologies in Cultivation of Bulbous Flower Crops for Livelihood Enhancement”

               A training programme on Adoption of improved technologies in cultivation of bulbous flower crops for livelihood enhancement” under Tribal Sub Plan funded project on “Improving livelihood security of tribal community by introduction of improved varieties of ornamental crops in the tribal areas of Goa” was organised on February 27, 2015 at Cotigao Panchayat, Canacona Taluka, Goa by the Project Investigator, Dr. Safeena S.A and the Project Co-Investigator, Dr. M. Thangam. A total of 62 tribal farmers from various parts of Canacona Taluka attended the same. The Training coordinator, Dr. Safeena S. A, welcomed the participants to the training program and gave a brief outline of the schedule of training program. She urged the trainees to use the opportunity to update their knowledge about bulbous flower crops and adopt improved technologies in cultivation of bulbous flower crops for livelihood enhancement. Mrs. Maya Gaonkar, Sarpanch, Cotigao Panchayat and Mr.Datta Velip, Deputy Sarpanch, Cotigao Panchayat sensitized the participants about the importance of floriculture in Goa. During the technical sessions, Dr. M. Thangam delivered a lecture on “Improved methods for cultivation of gladiolus under agro climatic conditions of Goa” and Dr. Safeena S.A delivered a lecture on “Improved methods for cultivation of tuberose for livelihood enhancement”. Technical sessions were followed by discussion. Then planting materials viz. corms of 15 gladiolus varieties, bulbs of 3 tuberose varieties and technical bulletin on “Ready Reckoner on Cultivation of Gladiolus” were distributed to tribal farmers. Training ended with field demonstration of cultivation of bulbous flower crops. The training programme highlighted the importance of floriculture in Goa with particular reference to cultivation of bulbous flower crops.
