ICAR-CCARI Participated in State Level Stakeholders' Workshop on Implementation of TED in Trawl Gears of Goa

    On the 19th of July, 2024, ICAR-CCARI actively participated in the State Level Stakeholders' Workshop on the Implementation of TED in Trawl Gears of Goa. The workshop, organized by MPEDA, was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji, Goa. This event aimed to promote sustainable fishing practices through the implementation of Turtle Excluder Devices (TED) in trawl gears, an initiative crucial for the conservation of marine life, particularly sea turtles. The program commenced with a welcome address by Shri. Rajakumar Naik, Deputy Director of MPEDA, RD Mangalore. Dr. Parveen Kumar, Director of ICAR-CCARI, delivered the Presidential Address, emphasizing the importance of TED implementation for sustainable fisheries managemen and  importance of turtle conservation. He also highlighted ICAR-CCARI's commitment to support such initiatives and collaborating with stakeholders for the advancement of fisheries technology and sustainability in Goa.

    Following this, an informative presentation on CIFT-MPEDA-TED, including a demonstration and videos by Dr. Joice Thomas, Chief Executive of MPEDA-NETFISH, was delivered.The workshop concluded with an engaging discussion and Q&A session, where participants discussed the challenges and solutions related to TED implementation. Certificates were distributed, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Shri. Santosh Kadam, SCo, MPEDA-NETFISH. The program ended with a lunch at the Multi-Purpose Hall, fostering further networking and collaboration among the attendees.ICAR-CCARI's participation in this workshop underscored its role in promoting sustainable aquaculture practices and its dedication to the conservation of marine biodiversity. The insights gained from this workshop are expected to significantly contribute to the effective implementation of TEDs in Goa, ensuring a more sustainable future for the region's fisheries. Dr. Parveen Kumar and Shri. Trivesh Mayekar, Scientist, attended this workshop, further representing ICAR-CCARI's commitment to this crucial initiative.
