“Swachh Bharat Mission” set in motion

Owing to the importance of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” or Clean India Mission” lead by the Goverment of India, the ICAR Research Complex for Goa has actively organised various activities between 25th September and 2nd October, 2014. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban) will last a span of five years and cover 4,041 statutory towns. The earlier mission on sanitation, Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, will be restructured into Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Rural). The urban component of SBA will be implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development, and the rural component by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. The main objective was to propagate a cleanliness drive in and around the institute and the surroundings of Old Goa.

The scientists, technical, supporting and contractual staff of the Institute and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) undertook a cleanliness drive under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Narendra Pratap Singh, Director of the institute. The cleanliness drive was initiated in different sections of the institute and Old Goa and the director appealed the whole hearted participation of each and every individual to keep the surroundings clean. He also emphasised that everybody should spend at least two hours in a week for the accomplishment of hygiene of our environment. The institute has carried out the following activities under the “Clean India Mission”. Cleansing of entire main building, laboratories, field experimental plots, residential complex, KVK and general premises of the institute was executed during the cleanliness drive. The institute has fixed poster boards on “Sanitation and Hygiene” in and around the National Highway and Old Goa.

On the occasion, all the staff members of the institute have taken a pledge for keeping the hygiene of their surroundings.  A silent procession was also organised to create awareness and motivate the people of Old Goa for maintaining individual hygiene and cleanliness of the surroundings. Moreover, the institute has called for the whole-souled co-operation of the public for cleaner Old Goa under the mission. Through the official website (www.icargoa.res. in) and facebook community (ICAR Research Complex for Goa), the institute triggered the campaign to the people of the global village.
