B. Sc (Agri) Agriculture & allied subjects from UAS Dharwad, 2000
Area of Specialization / Research interests
Plant Breeding and Genetics, Breeding rice varieties for coastal saline soils, Marker assisted selection, Germplasm collection, conservation and utilization.
Significant Contibutions:
Developed four high yielding salt tolerant paddy varieties viz., Goa Dhan 1, Goa Dhan 2, Goa Dhan 3 and Goa Dhan 4 (SVRC release). These medium-duration rice varieties yield 70-80% more compared to the locally cultivated varieties. Additionally, they possess a grain type that meets the preferences of local consumers in the state of Goa.
Co-developer of cowpea variety Goa Cowpea 3 (SVRC release) recommended for cultivation in the rice fallow areas of Goa state.
Co-developer of rice variety DRR Dhan 58 (CVRC release) recommended for cultivation in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Developed and registered rice landrace ‘Korgut’ (INGR No. 14055 and IC No. IC0599689) with ICAR-NBPGR as Genetic Stock showing tolerance to salt stress at seedling stage.
Collected and conserving more than 150 landraces and wild relatives of rice from Goa and adjoining districts in Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Awards:
Recipient of Goa State Biodiversity Award in the ‘Applied Biodiversity Researcher’ category for the year 2022, in recognition of contributions in the field of agrobiodiversity, ecology, and environment.
ICAR CCARI best worker award (Scientist category): 2018-19
ICAR CCARI best worker award (Scientist category): 2020-21
Best Poster Presentation (first place) during International E-Symposium on Coastal Agriculture (ISCA Webinar): Transforming Coastal Zone for Sustainable Food and Income Security organized by Indian Society of Coastal Agricultural Research (ISCAR), Canning Town, West Bengal during 16-19th March, 2021.
Current focus:
Collection, conservation, characterization and utilization of rice landraces and wild relatives from west coast region of India.
Breeding and development of high yielding multiple stress tolerant rice varieties for the low lying salt affected coastal saline soils.
Pre-breeding, QTL mapping and Marker assisted selection.
Outreach and extension
· Popularized drought-tolerant rice variety, Sahbhagi Dhan, in the upland areas of Goa State through extensive large-scale demonstrations and Front Line Demonstrations conducted over a period of more than 10 years in the villages of Goandongrim and Cotigao, located in the Canacona block of South Goa district. These efforts have resulted in a significant expansion in terms of area coverage, as well as an increase in farmers' productivity and net income.
