Field visit to progressive ornamental fish farm at Eriyad, Kodungallur

A field visit was made to the novel ornamental fish unit established by Mr. Sandeep at Eriyad, Kodungallur in Thrissur coastal district on 18 July 2024. Mr Sandeep started his unit with support from Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Kerala a couple years ago. He maintains the ornamental fish unit of seven varieties of species including Siamese fighter fish, guppy, freshwater angel fish, sword tail and zebra fish. The farmer is currently able to supply about 1000 fish seeds per day to different parts of India through online and offline marketing channels. The farmer showed his interest in taking up the technology for breeding of indigenous ornamental fishes of the western Ghats such as Puntius denisonii, Pethia setnai and Haludaria pradhani. He has also expressed his consent for popularising the novel bamboo aquarium design developed by ICAR-CCARI. Dr Sreekanth, Senior Scientist from ICAR-CCARI assured all technical support for his endeavours in the ornamental fish culture and also requested his support for organising training programmes for enthusiasts, hobbyists and entrepreneurs in ornamental fish culture along the coastal region.
