Interaction with women farmers on floriculture at Kodungallur, Thrissur, Kerala

An interaction was organized with the women farmers from Kodungallur, Thrissur coastal district, Kerala on 12-10-2024. A total of eight farmers (5 women, including 3 SC) were present during the interaction. There is a high demand for the jasmine and marigold in the region due to the presence of temples and also being a hub of the local festivals and celebrations. Therefore, the farmers were interested to take up the cultivation of ornamental flowers such as marigold and jasmine. Shri. Vijin P, the coordinator of the group requested to them register the group and take up the activity with technical support from ICAR-CCARI, Goa and Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur. Dr Sreekanth GB, Senior Scientist (FRM), ICAR-CCARI assured all technical, and marketing support for this endeavor from the institute. He has also requested them to include vegetable cultivation along with the activity in order to assure steady income. A fish cage culture unit was also present near to the households of the women farmers. Thus, he has also suggested to start a small first processing facility for the harvested fish, which can be a source of additional income for the farmers.
