Training programme on 'Intensive Fruit Cultivation'

A training programme on ’Intensive Fruit Cultivation’ was conducted by Dr. (Mrs.) S.Priya Devi, Senior Scientist (Horticulture- Fruit Science) from 20 to 22 March 2017 at the ICAR campus under RKVY funded project, “Demonstration of PFT in banana, pineapple and papaya in farmers’ fields of Goa”.

The programme was attended by Agricultural officers including ZAOs, AOs, AAOs and Field officers from Zonal Agricultural offices and farmers of different talukas to a tune of 37, out of which, ten were farmers.  This training programme covered aspects on soil health, planting material, high density planting, farming system models, fertigation, physiological disorders, important pests and diseases and their management and value addition all pertinent to important fruit crops of Goa. The programme comprised of lectures delivered by expertise from ICAR-CCARI and also field visits to different experimental plots of fruit crops.

Valedictory session

During every lecture, there was active interaction with the resource persons. There was active participation during the practical sessions also. Technologies like vegetative propagation viz., cutting, layering, grafting were demonstrated. Ideal soil mixture was shown and also coconut sowing in nursery bag was shown. During field trip to coconut based, multi species/ multitier system, concepts like utilization of vertical space, and interspace for intercrops like nutmeg, banana, yams, pepper etc., beehives for increased fruit set etc. were explained. Also on day 2, micro-nutrient deficiency symptoms, and disease symptoms were shown to the trainees. The trainees also visited the experimental plots in Block c on day 3, during which, TC banana plantation, drip irrigation, fertigation, venturi system, high density planting in pineapple and banana, pseudostem injection in banana, bunch cover in banana etc. was shown. Also, value addition in jack fruit was demonstrated in KVK with few items like halwa, pickle and bajjas.

During the valedictory function, the participants expressed their views and it was deliberated that language should not be a barrier during such trainings. Dr. E.B.Chakurkar, Director (A) gave away the certificates and CD containing the instruction material of the training.

At the end, samples of biological repellents to keep away the wild boars and other animals were distributed to few farmers and Agricultural officers from different zones by Ms. Maneesha S.R, Scientist (Horticulture-Fruit Science) so as to test and subsequently collect feedback about the product.
