Symptoms

  • Infection occurs on the fresh or on the pseudostem which spreads to rhizomes.
  • In certain cases, rhizome rot appears to be severe and affected clumps remain stunted.
  • The affected plants show varying degrees of yellowing and pseudostems come off with a gentle pull.
  • The affected rhizome shows varying degrees of brown shades compared to orange brown shade in healthy ones.

Management

  • Select healthy seed since the disease is seed borne.
  • Grow resistant varieties.
  • Remove the infected clumps and drench the area with Mancozeb to check the spread.
  • Treat the seeds with Mancozeb (4g/kg) at the time of planting.
  • Follow seed treatment with Trichoderma harzianum and soil application of Trichoderma mixed with neem cake @ 2t/ha or FYM 30-40t/ha.

  • The adjacent leaf spots merge forming reddish brown patches leading to leaf blotches.

Management

  • Follow crop rotation with non host plants.
  • Foliar spray with Mancozeb, Copper oxychloride, Carbendazim (0.2%).
  • Grow resistant varieties.

Leaf spot
Causal organism: Colletotrichum capsici
Symptoms

  • The leaf spots appear as elliptic to oblong and enlarge to 4-5 cm covering the major portion of lamina. The mature spots appear grayish white in the centre with a margin surrounded by yellowish halo.
  • In the centre of the lesion dark fruiting bodies called acervuli are often seen which produce spores.

Management

    • Remove the infected leaves and debris.
    • Apply higher dose of potash.
    • Grow resistant varieties.
    • Spray the crop with Mancozeb, Carbendazim (0.2%), Bordeaux mixture (1%) after the disease incidence.
