Training on “ Commercial Rabbit rearing” at ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Old Goa
Meat has become an integral part of human food to meet essential nutrients
as proteins. For balanced diet and good biological availability meat is
being preferred in modern era. Per capita consumption of meat in India is
only 14 g per day as against the actual requirement of 125 g. Non
availability of quality meat and its exorbitant price have restricted meat
consumption. Increasing the meat production through intensive rearing of
various meat animals will help to meet the demand. Rabbit is one among
them which can contribute substantially to enhance the meat production.
There is minimum taboo attached among the population for this species.
In this context, broiler rabbit would provide a new avenue for meat
production and could play a major role in augmenting the animal protein
supplies mainly because of its small size, low space requirement, rapid
growth rate, high reproductive efficiency and ability to utilize
non-competitive feed.
Keeping these facts in view a Consultancy training course on “ Commercial Rabbit rearing” was conducted during 29-31st July 2010. Dr N. P. Singh, Director , ICAR Research Complex for Goa, inaugurated the program. In this training all the aspects of commercial rabbit farming were covered and trainees were exposed to practical as handling, breeding , feed preparation etc. Trainees were also taken to rabbit unit of ex trainee from Goa Mr. Seneco Rodrigues at Chandor. Mr. Seneco who has taken this rabbit training in 2007 earns at least Rs.7000/-( seven thousand ) per month from his rabbit unit, also explained his experience about rabbit rearing. This kind of training was attended by many farmers from Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala state from 2007-2009. In the training from 29-31st July 2010 seventeen farmers have taken part.
