Seminar on ecosystem and biodiversity : Goan  perspective.


 

                A seminar on “Ecosystems and Biodiversity : Goan perspective” was organized at ICAR Research Complex for Goa in collaboration with Centre for Environment Education (CEE Goa State Office) and Association for Coastal Agricultural Research on 4th September, 2010. The seminar was inaugurated by Shri. Aleixo Sequeira, Hon. Minister for Power, Environment, Printing and Stationery, Government of Goa and presided over by Dr. A. K. Singh, DDG (NRM), ICAR, New Delhi. Dr. N. P. Singh, Director, ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Dr. Sujeetkumar Dongre, Dy. Programme Co-ordinator, CEE, Goa, scientists of the institute were also present on the occasion. At the outset Dr. N. P. Singh, Director, ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Old Goa welcomed the dignitaries and delegates and narrated about the importance about ecosystems and biodiversity. Shri. Aleixo Sequiera, Hon. Minister has expressed concerns about population explosion and its impact on ecosystems and biodiversity. He called on students and academicians to work for conservation of biodiversity in Goa region. Dr. A. K. Singh, DDG has stressed the need for conservation of natural resources for future. He stated that the development activities have to be sustainable to avoid ecosystem and biodiversity loss. He expressed fears of loss of biodiversity at many places. He emphasized for genomic research for increasing production and productivity.

           Dr. S. Dongre gave introductory remarks about the Seminar and gave an account of International year of Biodiversity. Dr. S. B. Barbuddhe, Senior Scientist proposed the vote of thanks.

           Later in technical sessions talks on floristic biodiversity in Goa region, marine biodiversity, biogeographical regions, biodiversity in horticultural resources, role of agro-forestry in mitigating climate change and livestock biodiversity were presented. The seminar was well attended by students, academicians and officers from different departments.
