State Level Workshop for Veterinary Officers and Progressive Dairy Farmers on NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DAIRY PRODUCTION IN GOA October 6-7, 2010
Dairy sector plays vital role in sustaining rural economy and livelihood security of the state. The full genetic potential of the dairy animals for milk production is exploited only with optimum nutrition, which is the vital determinant of the cost effective dairy production. The researchers have developed a number of nutritional interventions for sustainable dairy production, which needs to be reached to the end users. Keeping in view of the above facts the ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Goa organized the ‘State Level Workshop for Veterinary Officers and Progressive Dairy Farmers’ on the theme ‘Nutritional Interventions for Sustainable Dairy Production in Goa’ during October 6 - 7, 2010 in collaboration with the ACAR, Goa at ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Ela, Old Goa. The main objective of the workshop is to bring the veterinary officers and progressive dairy farmers at one platform to discuss on the current major nutritional challenges to come up for solution and plan future research agenda for achieving optimal dairy production in Goa. About one hundred fifty delegates including scientists; veterinary officers from the Department of AH & VS, Goa, Goa Dairy; progressive dairy farmers of the state, bank officials from NABARD, SBI, Canara Bank; etc participated in the workshop. The Inaugural Function of the two days workshop was held on 06-10-2010 at the Conference Hall of ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Ela, Old Goa at 10 am. Shri Ravi S. Naik, Hon’ble Minister of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Government of Goa was the Chief Guest. Shri S. S. Naik, Director, Department of AH & VS, Goa and Shri Madhav A. Sahakari, Chairman, Goa State Co-operative Milk Producer’s Union Limited were the Guests of Honour. Dr. Narendra Pratap Singh, Director, ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Goa presided over the function and Dr Prafulla Kumar Naik, Senior Scientist (Animal Nutrition) was the organizing Secretary. The Inaugural Function commenced with the ‘Welcome Address’ by Dr Narendra Pratap Singh, Director, ICAR Research Complex for Goa. Dr Singh hoped that during the technical sessions of the workshop, the deliberations expressed by the resource persons and researchers would contribute largely to the participants in updating their knowledge. Shri Ravi S. Naik, Hon’ble Minister of AH & VS, Government of Goa called for joint efforts by the ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Department of AH & VS and Goa Dairy to enhance the milk production of the state. Also, the minister emphasized on the dissemination of the advance nutritional technologies to the veterinary officers and dairy farmers of the state and released the ‘Souvenir and Concept Papers of the workshop’. Shri S. S. Naik, Director, AH & VS urged the farmers to avail the benefits of the schemes to increase the milk production. Shri Madhav A. Sahakari, Chairman, Goa State Co-operative Milk Producer’s Union Limited stressed to increase the green fodder production of the state to reduce the cost of milk production and released the Extension Brochure on ‘Feeds and Feeding Practices of Dairy Animals in Goa’. Dr Prafulla Kumar Naik, Senior Scientist (Animal Nutrition) and Organizing Secretary proposed ‘Vote of Thanks’. Beside the keynote address by Dr NP Singh, Director, ICAR RC Goa, there were three Technical Sessions in the two days workshop.
After the last Technical Session, there was an open discussion among the Scientists of the ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Veterinary Officers from the Department of AH& VS and Goa Dairy and recommendations and future strategies for optimization of dairy production in Goa were made. Planting materials of fodder crop, areca nut and coconut were distributed to the farmers at the end of the workshop. The two days workshop was concluded with ‘Vote of Thanks’ by Dr Prafulla Kumar Naik, Senior Scientist (Animal Nutrition) and Organizing Secretary.
