Field Day on "Naveen" rice celebrated at Amona

 

 

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra of ICAR Research Complex, Goa celebrated Field day on "Naveen" rice variety at Amona village in collaboration with the Amona farmer's Club, village Panchayat Amona and M/s Se5a Goa on Tuesday 11th October, 2011.

The event was organized to highlight the performance of a new rice variety "Naveen" which is a derivative of popular variety "Jaya" and suitable for parboiled (Ukdo) rice. It matures in 120-125 days and has the potential to yield 6 to 6.5 t/ha.

Dr. N.P.Singh, Director, ICAR Research Complex for Goa earlier paid a visit to the Farmer's field School at Amona started by Krishi Vigyan Kendra for last 5 months where in 40 farmers are taught scientific cultivation of rice under integrated crop management. He interacted with participating farmers and farm women and emphasized the concept of Farmer's Field School and also guided the farmers Club members present on the scope and advantage of having Club activities which is supported by KVK and NABARD. Participant of Farmers school narrated a new experience of farming through FFS. He later distributed FFS kits to all participants in presence of Scientists of ICAR and KVK staff and paid a visit to Front line demonstrations of 'Naveen' ready for harvest.

The formal function was held in the field which was graced by Hon'ble MLA of Pali constituency Shri Pratap P.Gawas, Mrs.Anushka Gawas Sarpanch, Amona village Panchayat, Shri Mahesh Mahajan, AGM (Safety) Sesa Goa Shri Pradeep Malik, Zonal Agricultural Officer, Bicholim and the President of Amona Farmers Club Shri Ulhas Parab and officials, Scientists of ICAR, Programme Coordinator, KVK, NGOs and more than 150 farmers from Amona and nearby villages.

Shri Gawas, representative of Amona farmers club welcomed the dignitaries and Scientists of ICAR/KVK and read a brief account of the Club since inception. The dignitaries present lit the traditional lamp followed by pooja of Lord Balram. Meritiours students of X class and progressive farmers of the village were honoured at the hands of the dignitaries.

 

Mr. Anushka Gawas, Sarpanch expressed her joy and happiness to witness the field experiment of KVK and mentioned that the panicles speaks for themselves about the new variety. Shri assured full support of the Panchayat for farming activities in village.

Mr. Mahajan Safety Manager in his address said that Sesa Goa will support all the innovative activities initiated by KVK in the village for all round development. Shri Pradeep Malik, Zonal Agricultural Officer, appealed to the farmers to take advantage of the developmental schemes launched by government for farmers club and SHG's which are upto 70-75 % of their proposal.

 

In his keynote address to the gathering, Dr. N.P.Singh, Director, ICAR mentioned the concept of the village adoption by KVK and said that instead of paddy as a sole crop, the farming community should have integrated farming system approach with rice based cropping systems, comprising of cowpea (Alsando) Black gram and vegetables wherever irrigation facilities exists. Further he laid stress in organic farming practices which could only be possible with animal waste and appealed to the villagers to initiate homestead and animal based enterprises to make their farming activities sustainable. He assured all the help as far as research and extension in the village so as to make Amona a model village.

 

Dr. N.P.Singh also highlighted the fact that marketing of agriculture commodity is not an issue but it has to be in an organized way by proactive role from the farmers club. He assured that the subject matter Specialists of KVK would provide all the necessary guidance to the Club so as to bring farm prosperity to each and every Stake holder.

The Honourable MLA, Pali constituency expressed his satisfaction on the active role played by Krishi Vigyan Kendra in enlightening the farming community on latest technologies and mentioned that the Government has initiated many developmental schemes which the club should be utilized for all round development of the farming activityŁ! village which he said is the back bone of Rural as well as Urban economy.
