Kitchen Gardening for nutrition and health

 Two day State level Workshop on “Kitchen Gardening for nutrition and health” organized by Fr.Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar in collaboration with ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Old Goa on 21st and 22nd September, 2010 at ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Old Goa. The workshop was organized in a series of programme under the theme area of “Be your own Boss-Level III” by Fr.Agnel College. There were fifty students from different colleges of Goa. In the inaugural function, Mr. Piyush Mehta, Director and Vice President, Manufacturing Operations, Syngenta India Ltd., Goa was the chief gust and Dr.N.P.Singh, ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Old Goa and Father Fredrick Rodrigues, Principal, Fr.Agnel College of Arts and Science, Pilar were guests of honour. In the welcome address by Father Fredrick Rodrigues, Principal highlighted the importance of the programmes and welcomed the dignitaries with floral tributes. Later Dr. Biula Pereira, the coordinator of the workshop briefed the event. Dr.N.P.Singh, Director of ICAR emphasized the need for orienting the students towards entrepreneurship, so that they can start their agri-business after the studies. Mr. Piyush Mehta in his chief guest address interacted with students and emphasized for pro active role in the society since the students and young generation will be the future generations of our society. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr.M.Thangam, Senior Scientist of ICAR, Old Goa. The inaugural function was compeered by Ms. Nikhita, General Secretary of Fr.Agnel College, Pilar.

During the two days, students were presented with series of lecture on homestead farming, kitchen gardening, vegetables, fruits, flowers and spices culture in the kitchen garden, medicinal and aromatic plants and its uses and establishment of kitchen garden for nutrition and health with above mentioned crops was highlighted. The lecture was followed by live demonstration on different of methods seed sowing, planting and establishment of vegetable garden, visit to herbal garden and getting familiarized with common medicinal plants of Goa.

The valedictory function was held on 22.9.10. Dr.N.P.Singh, Director of ICAR Research Complex for Goa presented the certificates to all the participating students and informed the audience about any help from ICAR on agriculture and allied activities. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Biula Pereira, the coordinator of the workshop.
